Creating Employment through Self Employment

The Self Employment Benefit Process: How Does it Work?

1 - Visit an Employment Ontario Services Centre

  • You will need to schedule an Employment Assessment with Employment Ontario Services in order to begin the Self Employment Benefit Program Process.
  • This will identify whether self-employment is a viable route of employment for you to pursue. The service centre will send us this information upon completion.

2 - Attend a Self Employment Orientation

  • Once your paperwork is received, we'll call to schedule an Orientation session.
  • At the Orientation, you'll receive additional details about the program, fill out paperwork, and be presented with information regarding your first steps in the Application Process.
In order to formally apply for participation in the Self Employment Benefit (SEB) program, you must provide the office with the following:
  • Evidence of personal investment (minimum $4,442).*
  • Up-to-Date Résumé.
  • Employment Assessment from Invest.

* Personal investment can be in the form of:

  • Current bank statements.
  • In-kind contribution: pictures must be accompanied by reasonable estimate of their value by a legitimate source and should only include portion that is being used by your business. (You must identify the purpose as it relates to your business.)

Additional requirements will be discussed with you at your Orientation.

3 - Planning for Success Workshops

  • In addition to the paperwork you will need to submit to the office during the Application Process, you will also be required to attend mandatory workshops. A schedule will be provided to you. You must attend all workshops before submitting your documents to start the process.

Summary:

  1. Visit an Employment Assessment Centre to complete required assessments.
  2. Attend an Orientation at the Self Employment Office.
  3. Begin attending Mandatory Workshops.
  4. Additional steps and process information will be provided to you in more detail at your Orientation session.
